This tutorial will show you how to make your own smilies. This is a great tutorial for website owners who use messageboards.
1. Start by creating a 15x15px transparent background image. Zoom in, by 1600%. Select the Elliptical Marquee Tool ( M ) and select an area like what I have done below.
2. Now go Edit > Stroke > 1px - black - Location: Center. You will notice it didn't make it completely black all the way around, so with the pencil tool, re-trace the area until you get this:
3. Take the Rectangular Marquee Tool and select all the area inside of the black border, then create a new layer ( Layer > New > Layer ) and fill it with #444444 (actually it doesn't matter what color you fill it with, so your choice).
4. The next thing you'll need to do is set your foreground and background color to the type of color you want your smiley to be. I chose this: Foreground: #37A3E8 Background: #2771A0. You'll want them to be the same color, one light, one dark. While still on that layer go to Layer > Layer Style > Blending Options and click Gradient Overlay. Click the gradient image after the word "Gradient:" and it will automatically make your colors appear. Hit OK. Change the style to "Radial" and leave everything else alone and hit OK and deselect (Ctrl + D). Here's what you should have:
5. Now comes the easiest part. Making the face. Create a new layer and draw a face. Square eyes, circle eyes, smiling, frowning, whatever. Make it original, I'm sure you can think up something. Remember to save the image as a gif so that way it's transparent. Here's what I made:
